Careers in Auto Mechanics
Civilian Mechanic Careers
A wide variety of careers are available to choose from for students interested in auto mechanics. While mechanics can choose to specialize in parts of cars or certain types of cars, some mechanics work on all of the parts used in any car. Mechanics careers are not just in garages and service stations. There are careers available across the entire automotice industry, from car and truck dealerships to fleets.
If your students are interested in these careers, the Army National Guard's HUMVEE School Program can help open the doors to these exciting and rewarding careers. The HUMVEE stands out from the commercial, civilian version, HUMMER. The HUMVEE has features that students cannot find in regular cars at dealerships. A National Guard representative can both demonstrate and involve students in a hands-on preventive maintenance check to experience the vehicle's innovation and technology.
Certifications
ASE Certification
The Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) offers a number of certifications in auto servicing, including machinist, parts, and consultant certifications beginning after two years of hands-on mechanics experience. Certification opens up doors to pay increases and career advancement, and gives students a sense of achievement and credibility. National Guard members are eligible to receive a GI Bill reimbursement for each certification test. Visit Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) for more information.
NATEF Certification
The HUMVEE School Program supports the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation’s (NATEF) curriculum in many ways, and provides students in the certification program with hands-on experience in brakes, automatic transmissions, engine repair, and preventive maintenance. Please visit the full list of topics supporting the curriculum.
